Cross the Northsea from Amsterdam to Eyemouth, near Edinburgh - a journey of 500 nautical miles. When the weather lets us, we'll visit Whitby and Holy Island.

Flying Dutchman ROTC 2010

During the crossing, you'll be part of the crew and actively help sail the ship. Under the supervision of the experienced crew, you'll run your 4-hour shifts and then enjoy your 8-hours rest. Depending on the weather, the itinerary will be the following:

Day 1: Amsterdam
On Friday around 18:00 we welcome you aboard the Flying Dutchman in Amsterdam. After a nice dinner at 19:00, the captain will give an introduction and the voyage planning, while you enjoy a nice whisky ‘on the house’.

Days 2 & 3: at sea
Early in the morning the ship leaves the harbour. After the impresive locks of IJmuiden we will set sail and start the crossing of approx. 220 miles. On Sunday we will arrive in Whitby.

Day 3 & 4: Whitby
The harbour of Whitby is in the citycentre. Whitby is a small fishermen's town, where you can spend the rest of the day.

Day 4 & 5: Farne Islands & Holy Island
After breakfast we leave Whitby and set sail to the Farne islands. The Farne islands can only be reached by boat and these rocky islands are a home to many seals, puffins and other species of seabirds. There are many old lighthouses situated on these islands, which are worthwhile seeing. It all depends on the weather, but the crew will try to make a landing on one of the islands with the Zodiac.

In the afternoon we leave for Holy island, which is close to the Farne islands. This special tidal island is situated just a couple of miles from the coast and cut off from the mainland twice a day by tides. It carries a lot of spiritual history and is seen as one of the treasures of England.

Day 6: Eyemouth
On Wednesday we sail the last part of this voyage to Eyemouth, south of Edinburgh.

Day 7: debarking
After breakfast the transferbus will bring the group to the centre of Edinburgh.

The daily routes for the ship depend on the weather and wind conditions. The captain determines the exact sailing program per day and consults this with the guests. A bit of adventure is part of this trip.
